Coffee & Capital Markets

Note: As of June ‘22, CCM publishing is on hiatus indefinitely as JR Martin took a position in institutional asset management with a US bank.

An independent content provider sharing data/research and other observations focused on:

  • Global capital markets & macro/economic analysis

  • Portfolio construction, asset allocation, tactical rebalancing, and relative value trades; traditional investments & alternative strategies

  • Leadership, team-ability, business strategy, and other inspiring topics

Our mission is to function as a valuable, trusted, and time-saving resource. We deliver access to institutional thought leadership, merging our own practical perspectives based on years of experience as field practitioners. We aim to keep our subscribers “informed and equipped” — with important data so they can formulate and refine their own actionable ideas — and with relevant talking points to elevate their external/internal client interactions. Specifically, we deliver steady recurring content in our Weekly Briefing along with one-off reports that address important topics and unfolding events like China Evergrande and Russia/Ukraine. Our hope is to engineer an affordable/engaging platform that makes a wide impact.

About the Writer

JR Martin finds morning inspiration from a cup of hot black coffee...

As an undergraduate at Kansas State University, JR Martin began his college career as a dual major: Finance and Journalism. In fact, he pondered a career in sports journalism while working as a student assistant in the Sports Information Office. Eventually, sports writing aspirations faded and JR transferred to Wheaton College (IL), where he graduated with a BA in Economics. He followed his Wheaton connections into the investments industry, earning an MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business in the years that followed. Ever since his early ventures into writing at K-State, however, JR has always valued communications. As an aside, formal writing is a rigorous exercise by which we clarify our thinking; it solidifies the learning process, transforming our research observations into firm convictions. With Coffee & Capital Markets, JR views himself as a sort of investigative journalist and free-lance curator. His ongoing mission is to relay important data and insights to help others better understand the global capital markets.

Go where the research leads and avoid being dogmatic...

With 30+ years as an investment professional, JR Martin has amassed an uncommon collection of experiences and perspectives. As a research director and portfolio manager, he has served a diverse set of clients, including institutions, family offices, wealth advisors and RIAs, and other private investors. He has worked as a senior partner alongside entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and advisory teams consistently ranked among the elite performers by Forbes and Barron's. Over the years, JR has developed a battle-tested philosophy: “Go where the research leads and avoid being dogmatic.” In other words, keep learning and adapting to a continuously evolving environment.
